This study investigates the effectiveness of the four-square writing technique in improving XI-grade vocational students’ hortatory exposition writing skills within a marketing context. Employing a quantitative quasi-experimental design, the study involved two intact classes consisting of 52 students. The experimental group received instruction through the four-square writing technique, while the control group was taught using conventional outlining methods over three sessions. Students writing performance was measured through pre-test and post-test tasks in the form of 120 word hortatory exposition essays, assessed using an analytical scoring rubric adapted from Jacobs et al. (1981) covering content, organization, vocabulary, language use, and mechanics. Following normality and homogeneity testing, the data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U, which showed there was no statistically significant difference in overall post-test writing performance between the two groups. Effect size was calculated using the r formula that indicating a small magnitude of difference between groups. To further investigate its effectiveness, the Friedman Test was conducted within the experimental group to examine differences in the level of improvement across writing components, revealing a statistically significant difference, with organization and content showing higher gains, while language use, mechanics, and vocabulary remained more limited.
